The Importance of Diversity in the Web Industry

First off, I have to make a confession: As a white male in my 30s in the web industry, I never really cared about diversity. In fact, it was quite the opposite. I often felt like I had to ‘fight’ to get recognized or find new opportunities. I had to fight against intentional decision making against my demographic. I am not unique, therefore I am overlooked. At times this caused me great frustration and often anger at the initiative.

The Power of Passion

When I first saw Sparkbox tweet about their new idea of #startYourShift, I was immediately drawn in. How to make the web better? I had a thousand ideas of what I wanted to write about, but ran into trouble narrowing down my options. Ideas spanned across great UX, user centered design, accessibility, simplicity and humility in your attitude. These are all areas I’m passionate about. And then it hit me: Passion.

Re-Igniting Sci-Fi

If you don’t know already, here’s a tip: I’m a sci-fi geek. I grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation. As a kid, I loved watching the Star Wars marathons that ran during the holiday season. I ate that stuff up like chocolate cake. It’s probably why I’m so fascinated by technology.
